The Beggar of Salamanca, Joaquín Araujo y Ruano (Ciudad Real, 1851 - Madrid, 1894), watercolor on paper
Watercolor on paper, signed and dated in Salamanca in 1885. Measurements: 50 x 35 cm. Joaquín Araujo Ruano was an acclaimed painter, engraver, and illustrator from the second half of the 18th century. He was born in Ciudad Real in 1851, and died in Madrid in 1894. In 1872 he made a trip to Paris where he continued to complete his training, and was able to meet painters like León Bonnat. He was also greatly influenced by the aesthetics of Mariano Fortunity, a reference teacher for young Spaniards. Later he also traveled to Rome, and there he established a close friendship with James Whistler, and like him, Araujo began to specialize in the technique of etching, which allowed him to collaborate with magazines such as "The Graphic" or "La ilustración española y American”. As for his painting, it will be characterized in general by a precise brushstroke, detail, and the rich color. In addition, works of traditional scenes will predominate, generally set in Spanish cities such as Madrid, Seville, Salamanca or Santiago de Compostela, to which he made numerous trips. In Seville he also represented some outstanding customs, such as the celebration of the Fair.
