Very important large life-size portrait of Mother Superior with Staff, Viceregal Colonial School of the 17th century
Oil on canvas, measures: 194 x 141 cm. Composition clearly framed by technique and style in the Viceroyalty school of painting from the first quarter of the 17th century, with prominent exponents who cultivated the theme of portraiture such as Alonso López de Herrera (c. 1548 - 1648), Baltasar de Echave Orio "el viejo" (1548 - c. 1620), Baltasar de Echave Ibía (1583-84? -1644) within the Novohispanic school and outstanding painters in the Peruvian Viceregal school of portraiture such as Mateo Pérez de Alesio (Lecce, 1547 - Lima, 1628), Joaquín Gutiérrez (1750-1790) in the Peruvian school, this portrait stands out for the bright colors used on the face, clothes and hands and the sweet expression on the face of the Mother Superior portrayed looking at the viewer with maternal sweetness and outlining a sock smile. While, with his index finger he points to the Cross that rests on his table, in a gesture that brings the viewer closer to Jesus Christ as a symbol of Redemption. Also noteworthy are the exquisite clothing and fabrics typical of the period, the large silver staff and the Plateresque-style armchair and writing-desk inspired by the models brought to the New World during the Castilian Renaissance, which allows us to date the painting as a work of Anonymous Novohispanic, very possibly made around 1610-1620. Measurements: 194 x 141 cm. Composition Origin: former private collection of a former Basque industrialist, Bilbao. the large silver staff and the Plateresque-style armchair and writing desk inspired by the models brought to the New World during the Castilian Renaissance, which allows us to date the painting as the work of Anonymous Novohispano, very possibly made around 1610-1620.
