[The Marquis, then Duke Claude Louis Hector de Villars (French: Claude Louis Hector de Villars, 8 May 1653, Moulins, France-17 June 1734, Turin) was the most successful French general of the War of the Spanish Succession and a diplomat. In 1733, he was awarded the highest military rank at that time — the Grand Marshal of France.

Contrary to his modern views in tactics and strategy, Villard put the offensive above all else and always said that " they die only in defense." Adored by the troops for his bravery and accessibility, Villard was not loved by his peers for his sharp tongue, critical mind, and self-conceit.

After Villard's death, 3 volumes of his memoirs were published. Voltaire only the 1st volume considers the work of Marshall, assuming that the other drawn up by Abbot Laps de Margon (La Pause de Margon) daily journal Marshal and his correspondence while Hiking with the war Minister.]
