Not to spend money on expensive glass bottles in the 19th century, merchants bought steklopokety marriage - free (or holyavu): the bottle is of irregular shape of a large volume, filled it with vodka and brought to his native village to treat countrymen. So they celebrated a successful trade on Makar and Nizhny Novgorod fairs. And "countrymen" were to be treated for nothing, i.e. were "for free". Butyl then served for storage of loose or liquid products. V. I. Dal does not know the meaning of the word FREEBIES because I extended it in the second half of the 19th century, when the scientist was sitting on his dictionary in St. Petersburg.
