A rare antique book about prison studies-a section of criminal law that gave rise to the development of modern criminal Executive law. The author of the book Sergey Viktorovich Poznyshev (1870-1943) – lawyer, criminal psychologist, Professor (in the last years before the revolution of 1917-Vice-rector) of Moscow University, who taught for several years the discipline "prison science". Prison science as a branch of the science of law, as a specific part of the field of criminal law, was formed at the end of the XIX century. The subject of prison studies was the execution of criminal penalties. The term "prison science" was used in pre-revolutionary Russia. From about 1917 until the mid-1930s, this specific part of the criminal law branch was called penitentiary law. The book consists of separate parts-essays, for a long time printed in the Scientific notes of the Imperial Lyceum. This book edition is the first attempt at a systematic presentation of prison issues. The book provides historical coverage of the prison situation in Western Europe and Russia, discusses the types of prisons and types of imprisonment, provides a typology of prisoners and classification of prison managers and their assistants. Various statistics are provided, for example, the extent of solitary confinement in different countries is revealed, and the effectiveness of prison labor is evaluated.
