Provenance:
Collection Neithold, Dresden, since 1921.

Johann Martin von Rohden, who spent almost his entire life in Italy, left a comparatively small painting oeuvre with about 120 known paintings, small-format oil sketches and oil studies.

In contrast, the collection of drawings is more extensive. In addition to the direct studies and preparatory sketches for his paintings, there are numerous different groupings of drawings, ranging from detailed plant studies to large-scale, panorama-like landscapes.

The present drawing shows, slightly off-centre, a view of the island of Capri as seen from Massa Lubrene, a small fishing village on the northern coast of the Sorrentine peninsula at that time.

Rohden has retreated to a higher location slightly above the coast, which allows him this focused view across to the island. With great attention to detail, he marks the surrounding paths and rocks and their growth of flat bushes and trees.

With the staggering of the pines towering high almost in the centre of the depiction, Rohden achieves the spatiality typical of his vedute, additionally supported by the foreground, which is often left empty or free. Together with the low rock wall supporting the right edge of the picture, this creates an effective framing of the island motif, which was already very popular at the time.

With the help of the dynamic interchange of delicate shading, Rohden knows how to effectively emphasise and express zones of light and shadow.

Typical for Rohden is also the topographical accuracy of the chosen section of the Capri view, where at the left end the group of the well-known Faraglioni rocks is clearly visible. While the right half of the picture is directed towards the island and the surrounding sea, the view on the left is towards the Torre della Campanella at the western end of the Sorrentine peninsula.
