Chiddushei HeChata"m Sofer Handwritten by his Leading Disciple, the Mahara"m Schick

From Moshe to Moshe, none arose like Moshe!

Leaf of Torah novellae on Tractate Nedarim from the teacher of the entire Jewish people, the Chata"m Sofer, penned by his leading disciple and successor to the leadership of Hungarian Jewry, the gaon Rabbi Moshe Schick - Mahara"m Schick, who copied them from the manuscript by his teacher - the Chata"m Sofer. [Pressburg, pre-1840.]

At the top of the title page, in the title, the Mahara"m Schick wrote: 'Likkutim MeChi'[dushei] Adm"o.' Mahara"m Schick does not mention his teacher, the Chata"m Sofer, together with the expression indicating he has passed away, which reveals that this leaf was written while the Chatam Sofer was still alive. It was copied letter for letter from the Chata"m Sofer's manuscript (finally printed only in 1888, approximately 50 years after the Chata"m Sofer's passing) so it is not too surprising that that text is absolutely identical, word for word, to the text written here by the Mahara"m Schick. Who like the Mahara"m Schick, leading disciple of the Chata"m Sofer, knew the great sanctity of his teacher, to be careful to be precise when copying it letter by letter like the Torah from Sinai!

The novellae copied by the Mahara"m Schick in this leaf from his rabbi's manuscript are not sequential novellae in the tractate, but novellae from the beginning of the tractate (leaf 29), its middle (leaf 34) and its end (leaf 66). It would be very interesting to know what brought the Mahara"m Schick to transcribe these novellae in particular. It could be that at least a partial answer for one of the novellae (leaf 29) is hidden in the body of the novellum itself, which the Chata"m Sofer concludes with the words "and one of the disciples made me aware of this."  If this disciple was the Mahara"m Schick himself, it is quite understandable why he would have chosen to copy specifically this novellum.

Aside from the historic value of this manuscript - novellae from the rabbi of the entire Jewish people, the Chata"m Sofer, penned by his leading disciple - there is also its inestimable segulah value as a manuscript. As is known, manuscripts by rabbinic leaders of the generations were used as amulets for protection and success, especially famously, the Chata"m Sofer's manuscripts. This is a manuscript by his leading disciple and successor, citing his teacher's novellae. In one of them (leaf 66), the Mahara"m Schick writes this blessing, directly from the Chata"m Sofer: "May Hashem grant you two sons like Bava ben Buta [leader of the generation!]"

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of Rabbi Moshe Schick - Mahara"m Schick.
