Extraordinarily Interesting [Wondrous] Historic Letter from the Zecher Yehosef to Sir Moshe Monterfiore

Very interesting and lengthy historic letter, covering [4] large pages. Entirely handwritten and signed by the renowned gaon Yosef Zechariah Stern, av beit din of Shavel and author of Zecher Yehosef - one of the geonim of recent generations. The letter was sent to the righteous Sir Moshe Montefiore. 1883.

In his letter, the Zecher Yehosef expresses his appreciation to Sir Montefiore for the large donation he gave for the benefit of the Shavel Talmud Torah "which will be distributed to them on the day their highnesses the czar and his czarina are crowned. The av beit din of Shavel describes how he used these funds to acquire new shoes for all the students and for the magnificent feasts arranged for the full two days of the coronation.

This may be refering to the coronation of Czar Alexander III of Russia, who was known as a peacemaker, during whose reign Shavel was located within his empire [although according to the history books, the emperor was already crowned two years earlier, in 1881]. It is also interesting that his coronation was of such great importance to Montefiore [who was an English subject], that he saw fit to make such a substantial donation for the coronation celebrations. Historians have their interpretations.

After this, the av beit din gives an important and detailed name list of sixty-four children at the Talmud Torah in Shavel, Lithuania, their family names and their fathers' names.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the renowned gaon Rabbi Yosef Zechariah Stern.
