Beautiful, Unique Manuscript. Epigrams and Riddles. Holland, 1832. Unprinted

Unique work, complete from beginning to end. Written in a very beautiful Ashkenazic script, accompanied by graphic decorations. The work deals with hints for holidays, epigrams and riddles, by the youth, Shalom [...] Gorinchem, Holland. 1832.

As stated, this is the complete manuscript - from the title at the beginning "L'Shomrei Mishmeret HaKodesh" through the colophon on the second-to-last leaf: "Written and completed on Tuesday ... 21 Shevat ... 1832 [chronogram: י'ה'י'ו' ל'ר'צ'ו'ן' ל'פ'נ'י'ך' לפ"ג"]" and the author's signature at the end: "Signing with limp hands, may my words be pleasant, the youth Shalom [Ben? Yosef] Lieberman, a teacher among the people."

Page 2: "And if you want to know my name, go to the end and you'll find it without my signature." The final page bears a hard-to-decipher calligraphic signature. However, the writer emphasizes his name on leaf 26, with the letters ש'ל'ו'ם' marked at the beginnings of words.

From the manuscript, "a hint for the laws of Chanukah candle lighting in the Torah" - the author finds all the laws for lighting Chanukah candles in the initials of the first passuk of parashat Miketz, which is always read during Chanukah: "ויהי מקץ שנתים ימים וכו'" in which שנתים stands for ש'מונה 'נרות ת'דליק י'מין מ'זוזה; and י'מ'י'ם stands for י'תחיל מ'ימין י'יסיים מ'שמאל, and so forth throughout the entire verse. An example of the riddles in the manuscript, rhyming in the original Hebrew: "Ya'akov went after Rachel and found Leah, picked her up on his shoulder, and found Rachel lying in his lap. He arose in anger, and slaughtered Rachel [a lamb] in good taste ..." ["יעקב הלך אחר רחל, ומצא לאה, ונטלה על כתפו, ומצא רחל שוכבת בחיקו, וקם בזעם, ושחט את רחל בטוב טעם"]
