Holocaust Survivors: Rare Controversial Letter from the Leaders of the Feldafing DP Camp

"They are disparaging the name of Agudat Yisrael and defaming Hashem"

Rare and lengthy polemic letter from the leaders of Va'ad HaChareidim in the Feldafing Displaced Persons camp. The letter was sent to rabbis in the United States with harsh complaints against Zeirei Agudath Israel for attempting to take the leadership of the DP camp. Feldafing [Germany] on the eve of Shabbat Noach 1945.

Lengthy addition at the end of the letter handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Yechezkel Rotner, av beit din of the Shomkut community, who served as chairman of the rabbinical committee at the camp. The letter also mentions the Admo"r of Sanz-Klausenberg, the sacred gaon Rabbi Yekutiel Yehudah Halberstam, a member of the Va'ad Rabbanim at the DP camp.

In this letter, the leaders of the camp describe the development of the Va'ad HaChareidim at the camp. It was established by delegates from all communities from all the cities, "Polish, Lithuanian and Hungarian" without any consideration of political affiliation, etc. The Va'ad established a soup kitchen, a mikveh, a collection of sefarim, and study halls. They arranged the return of the youth to the beit midrash, to routine life as it was before the war.

At present, youth from a new committee calling themselves Zeirei Agudas Yisroel are bringing politics into rescue issues and this is causing unrest between G-d-fearing Jews. They are also taking packages that arrive for private individuals distributing them to people without permission, etc. Their activities have caused the soup kitchen to collapse, and have caused other inestimable damage to all matters of Judaism, and they are disparaging the name of Agudat Yisrael.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Yechezkel Rotner, av beit din of Shomkut.
