Important Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Natan HaLevi Bamberger, Av Beit Din of Würzburg, to the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Würzburg, 1894

Important and interesting letter handwritten and signed by the renowned gaon Rabbi Natan HaLevi Bamberger, son and successor of the Würzburger Rav, to his close friend, mara d'ara Yisrael, the gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Würzburg, 1894.

The letter deals with funds sent by the av beit din of Würzburg to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld for distribution to "upright people in the Holy Land." It is well-known that in those years, the livelihood of residents of the Land of Israel relied almost exclusively on the chalukah funds. In this letter, unlike most letters discussing this issue (an extremely important issue in those years in the Land of Israel), the names of the recipients are included. Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld was also one of the recipients - he received the highest amount, respectably granted " as a fee for his troubles." The list of recipients as decided by the av beit din of Würzburg include prominent Jerusalem personalities, including: the gaon and Chassid Rabbi Baruch Mandelbaum, author of Noda B'She'arim, his son Rabbi Ya'akov Mandelbaum Shu"b, Rabbi Webber, Rabbi Shlomo Aharon Wertheimer, editor of the genizah manuscripts, and other names of residents of the holy city of Jerusalem. Rabbi Sonnenfeld is also requested to give a generous sum to the righteous Rabbi Meir Shenbaum's widow. In conclusion, the av beit din of Würzburg requests that his good friend send receipts with his signature to show the honored gvir, for the sake of transparency.
