Important and Lengthy Halachic Responsum Handwritten by the Posek HaDor the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner

Important and lengthy halachic responsum [approximately 400 words], entirely handwritten and signed by the posek hador, the gaon Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner. The responsum is addressed to the gaon Rabbi Shmuel David HaKohen Gross shlit"a, rabbi of the Gur Chassidim in Ashdod. It discusses the law of bedikat chametz in our generation. Zichron Meir, Bnei Brak, 1990. Printed in Shu"t Shevet HaLevi Part VIII, siman 113.

Rabbi Wosnor discusses the question of the propriety of making a blessing on bedikat chametz given that the entire Jewish people has the custom of selling all their chametz - perhaps this is a berachah l'vatalah. He writes in his golden tongue, "My beloved friend, this is an old debate between leading Acharonim [the Chayyei Adam and the Chatam Sofer]. He writes "Today the custom is that we rent out the rooms that may contain chametz in them to non-Jews, and there is no need to examine those places according to the Chatam Sofer, as long as he leaves one room that is not sold.

"And one who wants to fulfil the halachah according to all opinions sells only the places he knowingly has chametz, intentionally left there, and the rest of his home can remain in his possession and be examined, per halachah, for chametz he was unaware of, as per the early custom.
