Addition to the Print: Rare and Lengthy Early Responsum Handwritten by the Minchat Yitzchak

Lengthy and rare halachic responsum [over 350 words]. Entirely handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Ya'akov Weiss, later ga'ava"d of the Edah HaChareidit in Jerusalem and leading rabbi in the Land of Israel [from the period he served as head dayan in Manchester]. Manchester, 1951. The responsum was printed in Shu"t Minchat Yitzchak Part IX siman 84, with an addition - more than what was printed in the sefer.

The letter discusses two halachic questions posed to the gaon Rabbi Shaul Wagshal ztz"l, a prominent member of the Manchester community and author of many sefarim on halachah and hashkafah. [Only the second responsum was printed in Minchat Yitzchak.] It is especially interesting to see the title the Minchat Yitzchak uses for the questioner at the end of the letter: "Your friend, despite not actually knowing you."

Content of the questions: Question 1 - a very important question raised not just once in our generation (yet it is the one not printed in Minchat Yitzchak) - whether it is permissible to eat in a hotel from dishes that may not have been immersed in a mikveh. Rabbi Weiss determines: In hotels it is permissible, only in private homes is it forbidden. The second question is: May liver be roasted by temporarily using a utensil that was used to stir coals without having been immersed in a mikveh? The Minchat Yitzchak deliberates the words of the Acharonim and his opinion is to forbid it, but he concludes "but is this inclination enough to act upon? In any case, it is unclear."

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Ya'akov Weiss, ga'ava"d of Jerusalem.
