Sifrei HaGr"a, First Edition. Tractate Avot and Small Tractates. Shklov, 1804

Masechet Avot im Peirush Rashi U'Feirush HaGaon Rabbi Eliyahu HeChassid MiVilna [the Gr"a] with the small tractates according to the Gr"a's text, brought to print by the Gr"a's sons. Shklov, 1804. First edition.

The Gr"a's commentary on Tractate Avot, with the small tractates according to the Gr"a's text. The small tractates were in a confused state "until Rabbeinu, Gaon Uzeinu came along, none other than the true gaon, rabbi of the entire Diaspora, Rabbeinu Eliyahu HeChassid, and recast them from the fog of their significant confusion, paving a clear path. The printers printed the Gaon's text of the small tractates in the middle of the page, and at the sides, the old, unedited version "so that the difference between them would be clear as East from West, and the advantage of one over the other as the advantage of light over darkness."

First edition of the Gr"a's commentary, printed by his two sons and Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov, the Gr"a's renowned disciple. The text of the small tractates was copied from the sheets of the sefer from which the Gr"a studied, according to his disciple Rabbi Sa'adiah, who studied these tractates with him. The sefer opens with an important introduction from Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov, who writes about the Gr"a's greatness, about the truth of his commentary, and also what the Gr"a said about general knowledge and about Aristotle.

82 leaf, 20 cm. High-quality paper.

Fine condition. Aging stains. Tiny tear in the margins of the title page, far from the text. Tiny tears restored in three additional leaves. Beautiful new binding.
