Letter Regarding a Hetter Meah Rabbanim Signed by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Gelernter
Beautiful letter handwritten by the gaon Rabbi Chaim Gelernter, av beit din of Kitov, one of the most prominent rabbis of Galicia. Sent to the gaon Rabbi Meshulam Roth, av beit din of Chernowitz, with a request to collect signatures from Hungarian rabbis to release a man from his chained status, and that his wife agree to receive a get. Kitov, 1902.
The av beit din of Kitov indicates that the husband is "... a poor man with no one to support him. He has no one to rely on, and no money. The gates of tears have been locked in his face; he is poverty-stricken, with absolutely nothing... I therefore find myself obligated to fulfil his only desire - aside from our obligation to save our brethren whose blood and the blood of their distress screams out to us. There is no greater nor loftier mitzvah than this ..."
The expression he uses is interesting: "If his honor would fulfil my request, I will also fulfil his honor's requests any time I am asked to do so, as long as Hashem allows me ..."
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the gaon Rabbi Chaim Gelerneter, av beit din of Kitov and of the addressee, the gaon Rabbi Meshulam Roth, av beit din of Chernowitz.
