Among the First Works by the Gr"a: Shnot Eliyahu. Lemberg, 1799. First Edition

Sefer Shnot Eliyahu - commentary on Mishnayot Seder Zera'im by the gaon Rabbi Eliyahu - the Vilna Gaon. Including two commentaries, a long commentary and a short commentary. First edition. Lemberg, 1799. Among the first works by the Gr"a to have been brought to print.

This sefer was brought to print about one year after the Gr"a's passing. It is the second of the Gr"a's works to have been brought to print (none of his writings were printed in his lifetime). The sefer was printed by the Gr"a's sons, and his son-in-law Rabbi Moshe Yehudah Leib of Pinsk was appointed to the editorial work. An interesting introduction from him is included. The sefer was proofread by the gaon Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, the Gr"a's most prominent disciple.

Announcement on the back of the title page annulling all other publications released in the Gr"a's name, written or oral, that were not proofread by his sons and disciples: "Announcement from the avot batei dinin of the Vilna community regarding those who took upon themselves, without permission, to establish halachah in the name of our master, rabbi of the entire Diaspora, the true gaon, the pious Rabbi Eliyahu of blessed memory."
