Important Letter Handwritten by Rabbi Moshe Clears to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld

"Only if the judges are good dayanim - will Jerusalem properly be called a city of righteousness"

Beautiful important historic (and current) letter handwritten and signed by the av beit din of Tiberias, the sacred gaon Rabbi Moshe Clears, to the giants of Jerusalem, the sacred gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld and Rabbi Yitzchak Yerucham Diskin, with the recommendation [that was indeed implemented] to appoint the gaon Rabbi Simchah Bunim Warner as a dayan in the Edah HaChareidit. 1922.

The letter was sent following the passing of the ra'ava"d, the gaon Rabbi Moshe Nachum Wallenstein, ztz"l [23 Adar 1922]. The gaon, Rabbi Moshe Clears, av beit din and leader of Tiberias, a leading Slonimer Chassid, suggests in his letter that his (former) brother-in-law, the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Simchah Bunim Warner, one of the generation's most righteous, be appointed as a member of the Edah HaChareidit's beit din tzeddek.

Rabbi Clears notes his candidate's virtues in the letter: "He is a tremendous expert in all aspects of Torah. His righteousness and purity are wondrous. He hates bribery and his soul is pure in every way ..." Rabbi Clears continues, "And I will restore your judges as in early times" and then states "and you will be able to call Jerusalem 'a city of righteousness, a faithful city.' Only after there are judges in Jerusalem as in early times, will it be able to be called 'city of righteousness.'" We will note that Rabbi Simchah Bunim Warner was appointed dayan in the Edah HaChareidit - apparently due to the influence of this letter.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the gaon and Chassid Rabbi Moshe Clears and the gaon Rabbi Simchah Bunim Warner.
