Fundamental Sefer: Nefesh HaChayim by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. Vilna, 1824

Nefesh HaChayim - Yirat Hashem LeChayim - topics in mussar, Kabbalah and thought in the depths of Judaism, by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, the Vilna Gaon's leading primary disciple. Vilna and Horodna, 1824. First edition.

The gaon Rabbi Chaim shares his doctrine of Divine service in this sefer. The sefer was accepted as a fundamental sefer in all Lithuanian yeshivahs. First edition of this important sefer later reprinted in many editions.

The sefer is divided into four she'arim, each with its own pagination.

Rabbeinu Chaim of Volozhin considered this work more important than all his halachic works, and before his passing, he told his sons to hasten to publish it. The sefer was edited and brought to print by his son the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin, and by his nephew, the gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Avraham Simchah of Amtchislav, both of whom served as rashei yeshivah in Volozhin.

With a lengthy introduction by the author's eldest son, Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin, who writes about his father's greatness and about his connection with his rabbi, the Gr"a.

Stefansky, Sifrei Yessod 478. Vinograd, Sifrei HaGr"a 1417.
