Hand-Drawn Shanah Tovah Poster from the Av Beit Din of Borszczow to the Zionist Leader
Museum item of historic value
Colorful handmade Shanah Tovah poster with beautiful calligraphic script in red, green and black ink. Sent by the gaon Rabbi Yehoshua Krohn, av beit din of Borszczow, to Herzl's heir to the leadership of the Zionist movement, Dr. David Wolfson, second president of the World Zionist Organization, and designer of the Israeli flag. [Borszczow, Poland, presently Ukraine; 1907].
Large circular [Hebrew] text at the top of the page: "May the living G-d inscribe and seal [you] in the book of life." David Wolfson's name appears in the center of the circle with the title "The Zionist" along with the passuk "David was successful in all his ways and Hashem was with him" as well as the verse [combination] written in the corners: "May Hashem bless you and support you from Tziyon." A lyrical blessing for the new year appears across the bottom of the page, in vowelized scribal script. The sender's signature is in the margins of the poster: "Yehoshua Krohn of Borszczow, scion of the author of Sha"ch."
The poster is drawn on one part of a large sheet, and the other part enfolds a lengthy letter in Yiddish as a separate leaf, to Dr. Wolfson. Rabbi Krohn's signature appears in a foreign language in the margins of the letter, along with his stamp.
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the sender, Rabbi Yehoshua Krohn, rabbi of Borszczow, and the addressee, Dr. David Wolfson.
[1] large leaf, divided into [2] leaves, 33x21 cm each. Glossy high-quality paper.
Fine condition except for tears along the folds.
