Sha'ar Pitchei Levanon. Especially Rare Kabbalah Sefer

"Especially rare find" (Gershom Scholem)

Sefer Sha'ar Pitchei Levanon - Kabbalistic compositions. Name combinations and special vowelizations, as elucidated in Sefer Shoshan Sodot attributed to the Ramba"n, and in the Ra'ava"d's sefer with his commentary on Sefer Yetzirah [by Kabbalist Rabbi Shneur Feivush Ben Menachem Manish]. Printed without a title page [Amsterdam? 1753?].

Rare and unique Kabbalah sefer printed as a series over three years, in three different places. The sefer was printed without a title page or any indication of the year or location of printing. At the beginning of the lengthy preface, the author hints at his name using the first letters of the words: Shneur Feivish Ben Menachem Manish. Later on, he relates that he was on his way to the Land of Israel and the ship almost sunk. At that point he decided to print this work on Kabbalah. He apparently wrote the work (or at least part of it) during the forty days he was quarantined when he arrived in Italy, as were all travellers who arrived in Italy from the Orient.

This part includes: "Part one of Pitchei Levanon ... Name combinations and special vowelizations for each month and year. Including combinations from Tammuz 1753] through Sivan 1755. With the final leaf featuring the table of errata.

The National Library has a scan of Gershom Scholem's copy, upon which he wrote "Especially rare find."

Bibliographers are of the opinion that this sefer was printed in Amsterdam, London and Italy, and that it is difficult to tell which leaves were printed where. As a result of this, there are several variants of the copies, and they should not be regarded as incomplete.

For more on this sefer and its author, refer to A. Ya'ari, Shluchei Eretz Yisrael, Jerusalem, 1951, pp. 527-530; G. Scholem, Tarbi"tz 25, 1955, p. 435 note 13; Ya'ari, Tarbi"tz 26, 1957, p. 109; Yode'a Sefer no. 2186.

15, [2] leaf, approximately 17 cm.
