CASANOVA CIGARETTEN
Porcelain sign / Enamel sign, convex, thickly stenciled, lithographed, GER around 1925, 40 x 60 cm, Boos & Hahn, Ortenberg-Baden, signed: Ludwig Hohlwein, München. The Casanova bulldog, highly prized among collectors, elegantly depicted with a monocle, scarf and cigarette, is undisputedly one of the most important German graphics of old advertisements. It was realized in five variations on enamel, the version offered here with a full-length scarf is considered the most sought-after. Gloss and colors are very well preserved, only the lithography of the muzzle is no longer fresh in color. I am generally only aware of 7 examples, and this is probably the first time in a decade that we have been able to offer this masterpiece of German advertising art.
