(1890 – 1971) U.S. Navy admiral, commanded heavy cruiser WICHITA on convoy duty to Murmansk. Commander Battleship Division Four and a task force, the first to comprise battleships and escort carriers. In September, 1943 he became Commander Amphibious Group Two, Fifth Amphibious Force, and in that capacity participated in the capture of Tarawa, and later in operations against the Gilberts, Marshalls, Marianas, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. T.L.S. on Navy letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Jan. 26, 1950 to Ambassador John G. Erhardt in Vienna. Hill introduces Capt. Robert M. Hinckley and mentions that he has been appointed Superintendent of the Naval Academy. Fine.
