(1831 - 1881) Twentieth President of the United States, Union army major general, assassinated while in office. A.L.S. 'J. A. Garfield', 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], to 'My Dear Hill'. In part: '…If it is equally agreeable to you, I should prefer Thursday – rather than today – to dine with the 56ers – and it will be a great delight…' Fine condition. Garfield was likely referring to a club or dinner involving his fellow graduates of Williams College Class of 1856.
