JOHN F. KENNEDY
(1917 - 1963) Thirty-fifth President of the United States. Kennedy faced-down the Kruschev during the Cuban Missile Crisis, re-invigorated NASA, and signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Assassinated November 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald. T.L.S. 'John Kennedy' as president, 1p. 8vo. on White House letterhead, Sep. 6, 1961 to Prof. Willard Thorp (1899-1992), an economist who served as an advisor to Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower and who helped draft the Marshall Plan. In part: '...I want to thank you for your distinguished service as a member of the Bolivian Special Economic Mission...[which] will form much of the basis of our relations with the Bolivian government. The outstanding job which you performed illuminated a most difficult area of policy and provided a clear and valuable guide for future action...You can be proud of your contribution...to the cause of freedom in this hemisphere...' Very good. Under President Víctor Paz Estenssoro, the Revolutionary Nationalist Movement introduced universal suffrage into his political platform and carried out a sweeping land-reform promoting rural education and nationalization of the country's largest tin mines. In 1964, with CIA backing, a military junta overthrew President Estenssoro at the outset of his third term.
